Best Lures For Haruan

Here are some pictures of what I consider as the best lures for catching haruan:

Night Fishing

Night fishing for Haruan is very productive. I got these guys with my spinnerbaits. lost quite a few fish to the thick hydrilla the fish like diving into. Some of the strikes I got were right at my feet as I was lifting the lure out of the water. I figured hook setting was as much caused by my jumping up in surprise!

Haruan Vs. Haruan

Photobucket
This picture attests to the ferocity of the haruan in its home waters. More an attack borne of passion or territorial greed than hunger. This fish bit more than it could chew.

Weapons and Tactics

Rods and Reels
Any rod and reel can be used to catch haruan but the best outfit would be a 5 1/2' to 6' medium- fast tapered baitcast rod with a 6-15lb. rating. Mate this to a small (50-150) sized baitcast reel and fill with 10kg. braid. This outfit should be capable of casting lures 1/8 to 5/8's ounce in weight.

If spinning's your thing, A 6 foot rod with a 1500 sized reel loaded with 5-10kg. braid will fill the bill.

Lures
  • Shallow running plugs- Rapala SSR5 and7's, Yo zuri's and other shad shaped plugs .
  • Big lipped, deep diving plugs for bottom bumping
  • Spinnerbaits- 1/8oz with #2 colorado blades. Tails, skirts or hair works well. I make my own since commercially available spinnerbaits don't make the cut.
  • Buzzbaits (small), poppers and Walk-the-Dog lures
  • Frogs -SPRO jr/Sr., Scumfrogs etc.

Calasiao, Pangasinan

During the rainy season, Pangasinan, has a lot of flooded lots. These temporary ponds especially the ones that are deep( if it has lotus, it's deep enough and has been flooded for some time) hold good populations of hungry fish. Cast plugs, spinnerbaits and frogs around, under and over the vegetation to find them

Irrigation Canal Haruans

Irrigation canals in farmlands hold lots of large dalag. The shallow water doesn't deter fish from moving up and down the narrow waterways. They patrol the edges preying on frogs, fish and insects. The best and most exciting lure for this is the plastic frog.

La Mesa Dam Haruan

Photobucket

La Mesa dam, Metro Manila's water reservoir has a small fishing pond full of Big tilapia, carp, catfish and of course Haruan. Casting small plugs and spinnerbaits along the shoreline is the best way to find them.
